1. Introduction

A long time ago the powerful Ilithiel was finally overcome and captured by her enemies. Her soul was partly ripped from her body, leaving her neither dead nor living. For ages she was being tortured. One day a brave hero ventured a quest to end her torment. Sadly, it turned out the only way to free Ilithiel from her enemies' grip was to retrieve her soul with an unique, powerful black soul gem.

Now, bound to this soul gem for eternity, Ilithiel burns with a fiery wrath while still being grateful for escaping her previous torment. Ilithiel is proud and wilful, only those strong at will themselves can make her wield her full powers. She can take over nearly any weapon and use it to strike at foes with the most damaging magic. Ilithiel is true to those who prove worthy and uses her magic to protect them. She expects to be treated respectfully and will unleash her full might upon someone betraying her trust.

2. Motivation

A long time I was using the daedric artifact sword Goldbrand and was rather happy with it. But finally I became a little bored and wanted something different. I thought it would be nice to have a weapon that behaved "intelligent", was able to find out an enemy's resistances and weaknesses on its own.

So I picked up Oblivion scripting. I spent quite some time finding my way around, but one day I had something that was more or less what I had in mind. I ran around with my new 'intelligent' sword and had a good laugh at Zombies nicely going up in flames and other creatures that had their weaknesses cleverly identified on being hit.

After a while I found some sword meshes I liked very much and wanted to use for my personal all-time weapon. First I thought of just changing the meshes of my weapon, but somehow a new idea got stuck in my mind: why not create something so that just any weapon can be made behave intelligent.

I always considered the concept of magic being powered by souls, items being enchanted by binding souls to them, rather fascinating. So I decided to stick to that concept when realising my new idea and started to create Ilithiel and her soul gem. After a lot more time, again I had something that was close enough to what I wanted. This time I thought I'd like to share it.

3. Disclaimer

I have been using this mod with my character for quite a while now and tested every feature. It seems to work OK. But I was also tweaking it a bit every now and then, sometimes involving larger re-writes. So it might still/again have some flaws. Use it at your own risk.

If you find something helpful, you may use the contents of this mod for any non commercial purpose without further asking.

4. Description

Ilithiel has the following capabilities and features:

take over a weapon (possess a weapon) - Ilithiel can be asked to take over, to possess a weapon. On command Ilithiel possesses the currently equipped weapon. When doing so, Ilithiel removes any existing enchantment from the weapon and imposes her own. Weapon charges - both current and max - are changed to those of Ilithiel. To avoid potentially messing up scripted weapons, Ilithiel will refuse to possess such a weapon. She will make a statement that "something is strange about this weapon" and will leave it alone. Ilithiel will also refuse to possess a bound weapon.

release a possessed weapon - Ilithiel can be asked to release the weapon she currently possesses. This is necessary when you want Ilithiel to take over some other weapon. When Ilithiel releases the possessed weapon, the weapon's original enchantment and charges are restored.

exploit an enemy's weaknesses - When attacking an enemy, Ilithiel probes the target on the first hit. She uses a minimal charge to identify the target's health and the target's resistances and weaknesses. So Ilithiel knows whether the enemy has resistances or weaknesses against either fire, frost or shock.
On subsequent hits, Ilithiel will use magic according to any resistances and weaknesses found. So if the target has a weakness against fire, Ilithiel will strike with magic fire. If the enemy has no resistances or weaknesses, Ilithiel will randomly choose between fire, frost and shock on each hit. If the enemy has resistances against all these three magic attacks, Ilithiel will use damage health magic instead.

impose weakness against magic - To further improve the effectiveness of her magic attacks, Ilithiel imposes weakness against magic on each hit on the target except the first - the probing - hit. Weakness against magic is only used for weapons that physically hit the target (swords, bows, ...), not for staffs.

avoid waste of power - Ilithiel does not waste her powers on weak enemies. She uses only a minimal charge on the first hit to probe the enemy. If the target's base health is not greater then twice the weapon's normal damage, Ilithiel will not use additional magic to fight.
Ilithiel does not waste her powers on enemies that are nearly dead. If the target's current health is not greater than the weapon's normal damage, Ilithiel will not use additional magic to fight.
This does only work for weapons that physically hit the target and do some damage. For staffs, Ilithiel always has to use her magic.

avoid hurting the player's character - Ilithiel won't use magic on the player's character. In case the player's character lost the possessed weapon in fight and it was picked up by the enemy, Ilithiel will not use its magic powers against the player's character (Yes, this happened to me once! I was quite surprised. I never thought I would feel the bitter bite of my own cool weapon). The normal physical damage by the weapon will be inflicted, though. Additionally on the first hit on the player, any magic that Ilithiel might have already set up will be used. Only on following hits no magic will be applied.

absorb health - Ilithiel tries to protect the player's character from death. When the player's character's current health is below 20% percent of the maximum health, Ilithiel will absorb health when hitting instead of doing magic damage only. This works for melee weapons and bows, but not with staffs.

regenerate power - Ilithiel regenerates her power. When idle, Ilithiel slowly regenerates charges. This works also when the player's character is sleeping or waiting. Ilithiel won't recharge when fighting. She restarts recharging after a set time interval after the last hit made. When a weapon is possessed by Ilithiel, recharging is directly shown for that weapon. After releasing the weapon from Ilithiel's control, its original charges are reset and Ilithiel keeps her own charges. Regeneration continues even when Ilithiel's soul gem is not in the inventory - e.g. was dropped to the ground.

assimilate other souls - When Ilithiel possesses a weapon, this weapon can normally be recharged with souls captured in soul gems. This charging will add to Ilithiel's current charge, as this is also the possessed weapon's current charge.

grow with the player's character - Ilithiel is closely linked to the player's character. The character's attributes - mainly willpower - determine how effective Ilithiel's powers can be utilised. They define Ilithiel's maximum charges and recharging speed and the magnitude of the magic effects used when hitting an enemy.

The mod has additionally the following general features:

two alternative ways to acquire Ilithiel's soul gem - Starting with version 2.0 there are two alternative ways to acquire Ilithiel's soul gem. After loading a saved character the first time using this mod, a message box will be displayed and you can choose either to get the soul gem immediately or to search and fight for it.
When you choose to get the soul gem immediately, it will be automatically added to the inventory. You don't have to search some ruins or accomplish some quest. Just wait a few seconds. The soul gem will show up in your inventory's section for miscellaneous items, not in the section for soul gems.
When you choose to search and fight for the soul gem, nothing else happens. You first need to acquire a book titled something like Copied Notes. This book will give you some background information and put you on the right track. It will also provide an idea about the enemies you will encounter, so you can judge if you are ready for that challenge. It is up to you to find the book.

help (spoiler) file - If you really struggle to find the book for the search and fight option, or otherwise are stuck, you might consult the spoiler file that comes with the mod. The file is named The Soul of Ilithiel Spoiler.txt and installed in the very same place as the mod's esp file. This should be the Data folder within Oblivion's game folder. The spoiler file is pure text and contains multiple hints separated by lots of empty lines. This should avoid seeing everything at once in case you just want a single advice. To get more, just scroll further down.

inventory used to toggle possession - You just have to 'equip' Ilithiel's soul gem to have a weapon possessed or released. Make sure the weapon in question is equipped. It wont work otherwise. When 'equipping' Ilithiel's soul gem you will get the usual message telling you this item can't be equipped. This is absolutely fine, just ignore it. After this you will see some message from Ilithiel, commenting on what she is doing and the soul gem icon and name will change.

inventory shows state of possession - The soul gem's icon and the name change when a weapon becomes possessed. The icon reflects the type of weapon possessed (melee, bow or staff). Icon and name are switched back to the original ones when releasing the possessed weapon.

magic used properly - On a hit with a possessed weapon, the mod does not simply reduce the target's health by some specific amount. The magic works just as it would for a normal weapon enchanted with fire, frost, shock etc. So if the target still has some magic resistance left, Ilithiel might very well fail in inflicting additional magical damage.

check for OBSE - The mod checks whether Oblivion was started with the Oblivion Script Extender (OBSE) and the OBSE version is recent enough. If not, a rather annoying message box will pop up every few seconds to remind you to either use OBSE or remove the mod.

5. Limitations

Alas, there are limitations I did not manage to get rid of and also a few 'features' that some might consider being limitations.

releasing a possessed weapon - A possessed weapon can only be released when it is in the player character's inventory. If you dropped it on the floor or put it into some container, you need to fetch it first.

recharging unequipped weapon - When Ilithiel was asked to possess a weapon and that weapon was unequipped before releasing it from Ilithiel's control, recharging is not visible in the inventory. Ilithiel will continue to regain her powers (regenerate charges) but this is not visible when looking at the current charges of the possessed weapon. Only after re-equipping the weapon, closing the inventory, waiting a few seconds and opening the inventory again, will the shown current charges be up to date.

limited effectiveness when used with bows - Ilithiel will use weakness against magic on a target being hit. This weakness against magic has a very short duration. It will probably time out before the next arrow hits. So this somewhat limits the effectiveness of Ilithiel's powers when used with bows. All other enchantments work just as well as with melee weapons. The short duration was chosen intentional, to not overpower Ilithiel. It works very well if you manage to show a nice swordplay, landing one hit quickly after the other. I like this and intend to keep it that way.

possessing a scripted weapon - Ilithiel refuses to possess a scripted weapon, telling you there is "something strange about that weapon". A script attached to a weapon could just do anything, including removing the weapon and messing up the mod. There are not that many scripted weapons in Oblivion, so this shouldn't be a severe limitation.

possessing a bound weapon - Ilithiel refuses to possess a bound weapon. As a bound weapon will disappear rather soon, I thought it is not worth putting in the extra logic to deal with a possessed bound weapon.

companions using a possessed weapon - The mod is designed to have the player's character use a possessed weapon. Possessed weapons probably won't work for companions. I have no intention to change this as it is simply not in line with the basic idea of this mod to have Ilithiel being (mis)used for a companion.

dropping the soul gem or the possessed weapon - I chose not to make the soul gem and the possessed weapon quest items, as there might be some problems with these. That means both the soul gem and a possessed weapon can be dropped and picked up again later. You should try that with the gem, it looks quite special. Both can also be put into a container. Ilithiel doesn't particularly like that, though. Any possessed weapon will stay possessed and recharging will continue even when you are not carrying Ilithiel's soul gem or the possessed weapon around. You won't be able to possess or release weapons without them, so make sure they don't get lost.

selling the soul gem or the possessed weapon - There is nothing stopping you from selling the soul gem or a weapon that is currently being possessed by Ilithiel. Ilithiel will consider this act as being betrayed, though. You will have to face her wrath and probably wont stay alive very long. So, you really MUST SAVE BEFORE SELLING either the soul gem or the possessed weapon.

use with low level characters - I am using this mod with a level 48 character. I took some time for balancing and believe Ilithiel is not too powerful for such a character. I did only limited in game testing for low level characters. Although Ilithiel's powers are linked to the character's attributes, I personally feel it might be slightly overpowered for very low level characters. Your view might differ. There where also some reports of strange behaviour of version 1.0 of this mod when used with low level characters. I was not able to reproduce these using version 1.1.

6. Conflicts

    • Aramlor reported a conflict with KEa_Skill_Extender. This skill extender allows you - besides a lot of other things - to 'sharpen/improve' your current weapon after having used it for a while and also lowers durability if you do not care much about repairing your weapon. This does not go well with The Soul of Ilithiel, as it needs to manipulate the currently equipped weapon too.
    • Any mod manipulating the currently equipped weapon has the potential to conflict with The Soul of Ilithiel.
    • Starting with version 2.0, one of the existing dungeons is extended to support the alternative way to gain Ilithiel's company. Any other mod changing the same dungeon might conflict.

    7. Questions and Answers

Q: OK, so I downloaded OBSE, but there are no instructions how to install it at the OBSE page. How do I proceed?
A: There is some information about installing and troubleshooting available at this Wiki page.

Q: I already have OBSE, but your mod requires a newer version. I downloaded the latest version of OBSE but don't know what to do next. How do I upgrade OBSE?
A: It is the very same procedure as installing for the first time. Just have the new OBSE version overwrite the old one. You might also consult this Wiki page.

Q: I just started the mod and chose to search and fight for Ilithiel. After that nothing happened and there is no quest entry. How do I start that quest?
A: The mod doesn't come with a quest. To get some clues you first need to acquire a book titled something like Copied Notes. This book will give you some background information and put you on the right track.

Q: I chose to search and fight for Ilithiel, but now I'm stuck. Where can I get some advice to continue?
A: If you really struggle to find the book for the search and fight option, or otherwise are stuck, you might consult the spoiler file that comes with the mod.

Q: I just started the mod and chose to get the soul gem immediately. But when I look into my inventory I can't find it. So where is that new soul gem?
A: Ilithiel's soul gem is added to the section for miscellaneous items, not to the section for soul gems. Otherwise it wouldn't work as intended.

Q: I found the soul gem in my inventory. How do I use it?
A: Please have a look at the section about the general features. There is an entry named "inventory used to toggle possession", describing how to make Ilithiel possess or release a weapon.

Q: I have a possessed staff equipped, I am already very low with health, but Ilithiel never absorbs health when I use the staff against some enemy. What's wrong?
A: There is nothing wrong. Absorb health works for melee weapons and bows, but not for staffs.

Q: I managed to loose Ilithiel's soul gem, what should I do?
A: There is no way to retrieve the gem built into the mod. I struggled some time trying to do this, but couldn't find a satisfying solution. You need to restart the mod (see section 13., "Restarting the Mod").

Q: I managed to loose the currently possessed weapon, what should I do?
A: That's bad. Now you can't tell Ilithiel to release that weapon and therefore can't tell her to possess an other one. Only way to fix this is to restart the mod (see section 13., "Restarting the Mod").

Q: I am short of money, may I sell a possessed weapon?
A: There is nothing stopping you from doing so, but Ilithiel will consider this act as being betrayed. You will have to face her wrath and probably wont stay alive very long. So, you really MUST SAVE BEFORE SELLING a possessed weapon. If you really want to sell the weapon, have Ilithiel release it first.

Q: I am short of money, may I sell Ilithiel's soul gem?
A: There is nothing stopping you from doing so, but Ilithiel will consider this act as being betrayed. You will have to face her wrath and probably wont stay alive very long. So, you really MUST SAVE BEFORE SELLING the soul gem.

Q: I sold Ilithiel's soul gem / the possessed weapon, but I forgot to save before. Now Ilithiel is killing me! What should I do?
A: You still can restart the mod. Follow the procedure described in section 13., "Restarting the Mod", ignore step 1 if you sold the possessed weapon.

Q: I want my companion to use a possessed weapon. Does the mod work for companions?
A: As noted in section 5., "Limitations", the mod is designed to work for the player's character, e.g. the character's attributes are used to determine effects magnitudes. So while some things might seem to work when handing a possessed weapon to a companion, others definitely won't. I have no plans to make the mod work for companions as it is simply not in line with the basic idea of this mod to have Ilithiel being (mis)used for a companion.

Q: Is this mod available in other languages too?
A: For the early versions I created both an English and a German variant. As maintaining both turned out to be quite cumbersome, I settled for English only. There is a Japanese version available, created by a Japanese mod localisation team. I was pointed to http://modl10n.oblivion.z49.org/, but at least for me, this page is not accessible.

Q: I don't want to mix an English mod with my localised game. May I create my own localisation?
A: As stated in the "Disclaimer", you may use the contents of this mod for any non commercial purpose. So of course you are welcome to create your own localisation as long as you do not sell it in any way. Please note that this will take some time as there are a book, a couple of items and messages scattered across multiple scripts to translate.

    8. Requirements

    • This mod uses Oblivion Script Extender (OBSE). You need OBSE v0018 or later to run it. If you have trouble with installing or using OBSE, you might look at this Wiki for help.

    9. Download

There are two files available for download at the mod's page at TESNexus, you only need one of them. You can choose between a ready to use omod (Oblivion Mod Manager file) and a 7-Zip archive. Currently there are only English versions available. For details about installing see section 11., "Installation" below.

    10. Upgrade

To upgrade from an older version, do the following:

    • Uninstall the old version (see section 12., "Uninstallation").
    • Install the new version (see section 11., "Installation").

    11. Installation

I generally recommend using Oblivion Mod Manager (OBMM), especially for bigger mods with lots of files. This mod does include only a few files, so you can also manage it manually rather easily. The choice is yours.

    11.1. With OBMM

    • Download The Soul of Ilithiel EN 2.3 OMOD from the mod's page at TESNexus.
    • Double-click on The Soul of Ilithiel EN 2.3.omod. This will start OBMM and install the mod.
    • In the OBMM window, locate and select The Soul of Ilithiel in the list of omods on the right. Activate the omod by clicking the Activate button.
    • Start the game and load your save of choice.
    • Wait a few seconds until the message box to choose how to acquire Ilithiel's soul gem is shown.

    11.2. Without OBMM

    • Download The Soul of Ilithiel EN 2.3 from the mod's page at TESNexus.
    • Extract the contents of the archive somewhere.
    • Move the extracted contents to the Oblivion Data folder, select yes when asked to overwrite.
    • Start the game and activate the The Soul of Ilithiel.esp.
    • Load your save of choice.
    • Wait a few seconds until the message box to choose how to acquire Ilithiel's soul gem is shown.

    12. Uninstallation

Note: Starting with version 1.1 you will loose the weapon possessed when just uninstalling the mod without releasing the possessed weapon. So please, YOU MUST RELEASE A POSSESSED WEAPON BEFORE UNINSTALLING.

    12.1. With OBMM

    • Make sure you do not have a weapon possessed. If you have a possessed weapon, make Ilithiel release it. Starting with version 1.1 you will loose the weapon possessed when just uninstalling the mod without releasing the possessed weapon. So please, YOU MUST RELEASE A POSSESSED WEAPON BEFORE UNINSTALLING.
    • Save your current game and exit.
    • Start OBMM.
    • Locate The Soul of Ilithiel in the list of omods on the right and deactivate it.
    • Right-click on the omod and select Delete in the popup-menu.

    12.2. Without OBMM

    • Delete The Soul of Ilithiel.esp and The Soul of Ilithiel Readme.html from your Oblivion Data folder.
    • Delete folder Data\textures\menus\icons\clutter\Ilithiel from your Oblivion folder.

    13. Restarting the Mod

    • Deactivate the mod.
    • Start Oblivion and load the game just saved.
    • Save and exit again. You now have a clean save without the mod's data.
    • Activate the mod again.
    • Start Oblivion and load the clean save.
    • Wait a few seconds until you receive a fresh soul gem.

    15. Version History

    1.0 - 2007-03-31 -
    • First public release.

    1.1 - 2007-05-21 -
    • Solved issue of enchanting all items of the possessed weapon's type. The changes necessary imply that you will loose the possessed weapon if you just uninstall the mod without releasing the possessed weapon. So please, YOU MUST RELEASE A POSSESSED WEAPON BEFORE UNINSTALLING.
    • Scripted weapons can't be possessed anymore.
    • Bound weapons can't be possessed anymore.
    • Ilithiel now considers selling a possessed weapon as being betrayed, just like selling her soul gem. After selling the possessed weapon you will have to face her wrath and probably wont stay alive very long. So, you really MUST SAVE BEFORE SELLING a possessed weapon.
    • A weapon now has its name changed when being possessed, with " > Ilithiel" being appended. This way it is easier to identify the currently possessed weapon after changing the equipped weapon.
    • Modified the way the name of Ilithiel's soul gem is changed when possessing a weapon. Now the name of the weapon is appended to the soul gem's name, separated by " > ".
    • Changed the way magic effects are used. In the inventory only the magic effects really used on a hit are shown for the possessed weapon.
    • Staffs now use Ilithiel's special magic too.

    2.0 - 2007-09-08 -
    • Some creatures - like Lichs - do have the chance to reflect magic cast upon them. This applies to magic damage inflicted by weapon's too. When having her magic reflected upon the player, Ilithiel would tell "I won't use my powers against you". This has now been fixed and magic will be reflected as it should be.
    • Added an alternative way to gain Ilithiel's company. Just as in previous versions you can have Ilithiel's soul gem automatically added to the character's inventory when starting for the first time with the mod installed but additionally you can now choose to search and fight for Ilithiel. The choice is made in game via a message box dialogue.

    2.1 - 2008-02-23 -
    • Fixed calculation of recharging timestamps to get rid of a bug identified by Alice Ravenclaw causing the recharging to stop functioning when the in-game month changed.
    • Changed all custom icons to include mipmaps. Some newer graphic cards (at least my ATI Radeon HD 3870) did not display the icons correctly without mipmaps.
    • The previously separately downloadable spoiler text file with hints for the search and fight option is now part of the mod and not available as an extra file anymore.
    • When you choose the option to just get Ilithiel's soul gem, additionally to the gem you will now receive also the book that you need for the search and fight option. Besides that, everything else being part of the search and fight option is set to a state as if you actually had searched and fought for and finally found Ilithiel's soul gem.

    2.2 - 2009-04-17 -
    • Fixed a problem dealing with an opponent's weaknesses as pointed out by DescentJS. When an opponent had e.g. both fire and frost weakness, previously Ilithiel would correctly identify those, but would not know their magnitude. So if the frost weakness would have been the stronger one, Ilithiel still would have selected randomly either fire or frost damage. This is now fixed and Ilithiel will always use magic matching the strongest weakness. This was not possible to do before OBSE v0013.
    • Added check whether Oblivion was started with OBSE and the OBSE version is recent enough. If not, a rather annoying message box will pop up every few seconds to remind you to either use OBSE or remove the mod.
    • Calculating the amount to charge for the use of Ilithiel's magic and the actual charging are now done completely by the game engine, not by custom scripting anymore. Uses shown are therefore now accurate.
    • A few internal changes utilising new functions of OBSE to cleanup the scripts a bit.
    • Added some more hints to the spoiler file to help locate Ilithiel's soul gem when using the search and fight option.
    • Ilithiel is now slightly more vocal and has gained different options to speak / shout for some events. Meaning when e.g. deciding to hit an opponent with fire, Ilithiel may either say nothing at all or choose between a few different messages.

    2.3. - 2010-05-16 -
    • Fixed a bug causing the check for the required OBSE version not to work correctly if you just updated the mod.
    • Fixed a bug causing the possessed weapon to be equipped when loading a saved game, even if it wasn't equipped when saving.
    • Fixed a problem that prevented Ilithiel from releasing a broken weapon as pointed out by SimpleGlitch. Now the possessed weapon can be released even if it is not equipped. You still need to have it in the inventory, though.
    • The gate to the tomb of Annarion should no longer have a German name.
    • Some internal cleanup using new functionality provided by OBSE v0018. This of course means OBSE v0018 or later is now required to run the mod.
