1. What this mod does:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This mod adds a new custom playable race called the "Normans" with armor equipment, and a horse sidekick named "Plunderboss" (he's essential, therefore unkillable, and comes with a summon spell). There's also a very brief quest to explain why a Norman from 11th century earth is even in Oblivion and a way to obtain the armor and weapons which occurs at the end of the character gen sequence of Oblivion. See section 3 "How to play" and section 5 "Known issues" for further information.

NEW with version 1.5: A new physiqued chainmail hood for the Norman Helm (courtesy of Ghogiel's Armour Resource) and a new weapon - the Norman Selfbow. Also tweaked stats on all armor and weapons.
VERSION 1.51 adds in a missing texture and further tweaks weapon / armor stats.

NEW with version 1.4: A new enchanted weapon with short quest to obtain it.

BULLETIN: The Norman Great Tower project has been put on the backburner indefinately until I can find time to work out the difficulties I am having with it.

2. Why?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've always had a keen interest in medieval history, and recent study on the Normans inspired me to bring them to life in Oblivion for my own personal enjoyment, which I in turn decided to share with you. This also reflects the progression in my understanding and capabilities in modding for Oblivion, as it's the first of my mods to include my own custom 3D meshes for armor and weapons.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. How to Play

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW in v. 1.5 - I finally found a way to use a physiqued mesh for the Norman Helm's chainmail hood, which looks much better than the original mesh I used. If you are using this with an existing savegame you will have to return to the Imperial Prison district's Armory building where you originally picked up your armor to retrieve the new Chainmail Hood (which is now essential to the Helmet looking correct). The trade-off I had to make is that in order to use this better mesh I had to make it go hand-in-hand with the helm - equip one and the other automatically is equipped. The player will look silly with no hears without the hood.

The other it is the Norman Selfbow - find this also in the Imperial Prison district's Armory.

NEW in v. 1.4 - enchanted weapon: In order to trigger the quest to get your enchanted weapon, you must have proceeded in the Main Quest of Oblivion to the point where you have spoken to Jauffre at Weynon Priory and have agreed to go look for Martin in Kvatch. This does not mean you HAVE TO go to Kvatch and find Martin, only that you have gone to Weynon Priory, given Jauffre the Amulet of Kings and have progressed far enough through his dialogue that you know there is an heir to the Emperor named Martin and it's your job to go find him "before the enemy does". As soon as you're done speaking to Jauffre in the priory fir the first time, the enchanted weapon quest will trigger with a message box about "having the sudden urge to go to this specific place at the centre of this world..." and so forth.

Requires Oblivion Mod Manager to install the OMOD version. Check the The_Normans.esp file in the Data Files list, start a new game and choose Norman as your race in the Character Gen sequence. The retrieval of the Norman Armor and Weapons is available as a short quest immediately following the tutorial quest. To obtain your horse sidekick "Plunderboss", simply proceed to Weynon Priory and visit the stable (through the archway in the priory) he's waiting for you there.

For players who have already installed this mod and do not wish to start a new game just to get Plunderboss, proceed to Weynon Priory and retrieve Plunderboss from the stable out back. He already belongs to the player. Manually add the Summon Plunderboss spell via the console command system:

1. hit the tilde key ( ` ) in game
2. type the following then hit enter:player.addspell SummonPlunderboss
3. hit the tilde key again to return to the game. Check your spells list and Summon Plunderboss should be there.

Should you wish only to use the Armor and not play as a Norman (by starting a new game)-SPOILER FOLLOWS- you can simply find the Armor and Weapons in the Armory building inside the Imperial Prison District of the Imperial City, but you will have to break in and steal it to get it. -END SPOILER-

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. INSTALL

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Oblivion Mod Manager, choose this OMOD file in the right column list and click the Activate Button at the bottom of the interface. For the zip archive version, just extract the zip to your Oblivion/Data folder and check off "The Normans.esp" in your data files options on game startup.

If you have any problems installing this, there are plenty of other mods out there and FAQ pages that can explain in detail how to install a mod for Oblivion. Teach yourself, I did.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Known Issues / Difficiencies

I have discovered there are some missing meshes and/or textures in the OMOD version. Just download the zip version and extract it with the file structure intact. The missing files are there. I will fix the OMOD version when I get around to it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This mod was developed using version 1.2 of the Construction Set and the most current version of Oblivion.exe after installing the Shivering Isles Beta Patch (ShiveringIsles_v1.2.0416Beta.exe) as of May 1, 2007, and has only been play tested as such. Therefore any statements made in Bethesda's disclaimer on said beta patch apply to this mod.

If you do not have the Unofficial Oblivion Patch installed you will need to download and install the Custom Race Fix mod in order to play / start a new game as a Norman. You can get that mod here: http://www.tessource.net/files/file.php?id=1815 .

As yet I have not created a female set of armor to go with the Retreive Armor quest, so if you play as a female Norman you won't be able to use the armor (well, it will look really wierd, anyway). Since the mod is inspired by real history, I do not plan to create a female version of the armor. Sorry if this appears sexist or offends you; my intention was not to do either of those things. Though this is fiction, my inspiration was from real history, and since there weren't any female Norman warriors in the time period the armor comes from I don't plan to make any.

Otherwise there are no known issues of conflicts, however, if anyone discovers any please email me (see top of this page) and I will attempt to fix them if/when I have time.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. Disclaimer / Usage

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please read section 5 in detail.

As with any other user created mod, use at your own risk and backup your save games before install. If you choose to install this mod, you do so taking sole responsibility and risk for any problems it may cause. The Author will not be held responsible in any way.

Feel free to use these meshes and textures as you see fit, including in mods of you own if you are willing to give me credit for them. If not, you are expressedly forbidden by me to use them for any work made public, and under no circumstances are you to use them to make money.

7. Acknowledgements

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To all the Oblivion modders who blazed the path before me and whose mods I have studied in learning how to do this stuff, many thanks.

I used one mesh from another modder's work - Bob's Armory for Oblivion - as the basis for the neck piece of my Norman Helmet. Many thanks to it's creator, Mr. Dave. If you're reading this, Mr. Dave, I assumed that although you didn't explicitly state your permission for others to use your work in your Readme you did, however, allude to including "a folder called UVW for modders who wish to edit [your] content", and I assumed from this that you would not mind others using your work for their own mods. If I interpreted this wrongly and you would prefer me not to use this in this release, please email me and I will rectify the problem ASAP.

Ghogiel's Armor Resource was used to create the new Norman Helm neck portion. Thanks Ghogiel for a great mesh!

Bethesda for the original textures and meshes - and of course NIFScope for their irreplacable tool.
