About this mod

Jail Shackles primary goal is to make the wrist iron in the game into a feared item, make jail time hurt you more and to make it more difficult to escape from jail. In short, it\'s a mod for criminals who thinks it\'s way too easy to get away with crimes.

Requirements
Permissions and credits

Current version: 1.04

Version 1.04 is only a minor change, it adds a texture for the Steel shackles.

The non-OBSE version no longer exists. This new version will require you to download all files anew, the Sound archive has been renamed to "Data Files" and now includes textures and meshes as well.
The optional esp package is only for the ones who want to change how many days you have to be in jail for a crime.

Please report any bugs or mistakes on the BGSForums

Jail Shackles - v 1.04
by DuggeDank
Released: 2008-05-15
======================================================================

Requirements
------------

Oblivion patched to version 1.2
OBSE (just use the latest version)
OBSE is a simple tool that adds more and better scripting functions to the game.
It is easy to download, install and run and except for adding more functions it doesn't affect the game in anyway at all.
It does not cause crashes or affect performance.

You will find the very simple install instructions and download here:
OBSE

Version History
---------------
1.03 -> 1.04
Textures for steel shackles added.
1.02 -> 1.03
Shackles will now be visible even when in jail, the bug that caused this was just a mistake from my part.
I changed when the NPC detection of your shackles is run to make sure the shackles are removed from you when you
serve your time and exit prison, before a guard arrests you for wearing shackles.
Included in this version is a new texture for Ebony shackles.
Changed the configuration to depend on an ini file instead of using the console. Should make things easier.
Removed the incompatibility with RGO by changing how I handle the dialogue.

1.01 -> 1.02
The mod is now fully compatible with Shivering Isles and should not cause any problems.
Made a few minor changes to the scripts.

1.0 -> 1.01
Added a check to stop creatures from detecting shackles and reporting player to the guards.
Increased the number of times the shackle detection is run to once per second instead of once every fifth second.
Decreased the percentage chance of civilian NPCs detecting shackles and made guards always detect them when close.
Added compatibility with changes in how long you have to stay in jail. Uploaded three esps that change this value.

What is it?
-----------

Many of you have probably wondered why Bethesda decided to add wrist irons to your character when they don't do anything. You can remove them just as easy as you remove a pair of gloves.

You might also have realised that going to jail doens't feel like a punishment, but rather a cheap way of getting rid of that bounty on your head.

On top of this, you don't even have to serve your time, escaping from jail is among the easiest things you can do in Oblivion, no matter whether you are a fighter, mage, thief or commoner.

Jail Shackles aim to improve these parts of the game.

What does it do?
----------------
For more details (and possible spoilers) see the section "Detailed information" in the readme files.

The first change is that when you start a new game, you will be equipped with a pair of shackles that you will not be able to unequip from the inventory. When you get out of the tutorial dungeon, a mini-quest will start, which gives you a couple of clues about how you can remove them.

The second change is that when you are thrown in jail, and have a high enough bounty, you will be equipped with a pair of shackles. As the tutorial shackles, you can not unequip them yourself. If you escape, the shackles will mark you as an escaped criminal and guards will arrest you on sight, civilians may report you to the guards if they do not like you.

The third change is that jail time will have a more serious effect on your character, the skill penalties have been drastically increased and you must now face the risk of loosing points of your attributes as well. I have also added a way to change how many days you stay in jail for different bounties.

The shackles will effect your game in more ways than to mark you as a fugitive though.
There are three levels of shackles, each level will have slightly different effects on your character. They are added to you depending on the level of your crime (your current bounty).

The levels and their effects are:
TypeEffectDefault bounty +/- infamy/fame required
Iron ShacklesSilence300 - 1499
Steel ShacklesSilence and a fatigue penalty1500 - 3999
Ebony ShacklesSilence and a fatigue, sneak and security penalty4000 -

Your fame and infamy can have an effect on the type of shackles you get. If you have a high infamy and low fame you may get a higher level of shackle than your crime gold corresponds to and if you a high fame and low infamy you may get a lower level of shackle than your crime gold corresponds to.

The shackles you get when you start a new game is of the lowest level and will thus only inflict silence on you.

How do I install it?
--------------------

1. Download both the packed .esp and the packed data files.

2. Unzip both files into your Oblivion\Data folder, overwrite if asked to.
- Alternately create an omod file with the help of OBMM.
You should now have these folders and files in your Data directory:
Data\DD_JailShackles.esp
Data\_JailShackles\JailShackles.ini
Data\Meshes\Clothes\LowerClass\WristIrons\Ebony Shackles Gnd.nif
Data\Meshes\Clothes\LowerClass+WristIrons\Ebony Shackles.nif
Data\Meshes\Clutter\MiddleClass\securitycase.nif
Data\Sound\Voice\DD_JailShackles.esp\ "And here you should find all the silent .mp3 files used for the dialogue"
Data\Textures\Clothes\LowerClass\EbonyShackle.dds
Data\Textures\Clothes\LowerClass\EbonyShackle_n.dds
Data\Textures\Menus\Icons+Clothes+LowerClass\Ebony Shackles.dds

3. Enable the mod through your choice of launcher and play the game!

How do I uninstall it?
----------------------

1. Make sure your character is not wearing any shackles (remove them with the command if needed),
save your game and exit Oblivion.

2. Disable the mod in your launcher.

3. Start Oblivion and load your game (ignore any "missing content" warnings),
save your game again to remove all traces of jail shackles.

4. Delete the file "DDJailShackles.esp" in the data folder and the folder "DDJailShackles.esp" in the sound folder.

How do I update from an older version?
--------------------------------------

Note that if the update does not include changes to the dialogue, you will not need to redownload it.

1. Uninstall the mod according to the uninstall instructions. Remember to save your game to create a "clean" save.
Also remember to write down any changes you have made to the settings before uninstalling.
If you do not remember what you changed them to, you can open the console and check what their values are
with this command:

qsv DDJailShacklesQUST

Look at the configuration part of this readme for explanation to what the variables do

2. Install the new version according to the install instructions.

Optional esps
--------------

To change how many days you stay in jail, use the optional esps. Either merge the one of your choice with your master Jail Shackles .esp or load the optional one afterwards. If you know your way around the CS you can change this yourself by editing the "ICrimeDaysInPrisonMod" gamesetting. The number of days in jail is decided by dividing your current bounty with the value of the gamesetting.
Days in jail = Bounty / ICrimeDaysInPrisonMod
If you set it to one, you will have to stay one day in prison for every gold of your bounty.
Default is 100. Which is ten days in prison for a 1000 bounty.
I have included three different esps that change this value. Choose whichever one you want.

BUT remember to think about the additional jail penalties that I have added, or else you may end up crippling
your character with only a low bounty jail penalty. Unless you are using the non-OBSE version.

With the default settings I recommend the Set50-100Bounty2Days.esp (1000 bounty = 20 days).
If you choose that the maximum possible skill penalty for 1000 bounty is 10(original penalty) + 40(-2 per day) = 50.
And the maximum possible attribute penalty is 2(-1 every ten days).

The optional esps are:

Set50-100Bounty2Days- ICrimeDaysInPrisonMod is set to 50, 100 bounty = 2 days, 1000 bounty = 20 Days
Set25-100Bounty4Days- ICrimeDaysInPrisonMod is set to 25, 100 bounty = 4 days, 1000 bounty = 40 Days
Set20-100Bounty5Days- ICrimeDaysInPrisonMod is set to 20, 100 bounty = 5 days, 1000 bounty = 50 Days

(Default is 100, 100 bounty = 1 day)

Known issues
------------

Because of how my scripts are running, you may experience a small issue if you try to pickpocket a guard while wearing shackles. If you are detected he will initiate the arrest dialogue immediately, which does not allow time
for my scripts to add the correct bounty corresponding to your shackles. So if you are wearing ebony shackles, have a bounty of zero, and the guards notices you pickpocketing him, you will not get a bounty of 4000(default) but only a standard pickpocket fine. Which in turn means that if you then decide to pay your fine or serve your time, your shackles will be removed for a much lower price/jail time than it should be.

Compatibility
-------------

Jail Shackles "works" in Shivering Isles to some extent. Neither shackles nor additional jail penalties are applied. The message that tells you how long you will have to stay in "jail" is working and no errors should occur.
If you enter the Shivering Isles with shackles equipped they will be immediately removed from you to avoid bugs.

Reneer's Guard Overhaul will conflict more or less with Jail Shackles. You can not set RGO to "Total Control" if you want to play both, as that will stop my mod from adding bounties as it should.
